Technical Authoring Using XML Features in InDesign

Andrew Pulcino, Language Intelligence's Director of Technical Operations, presented a workshop titled "Technical Authoring Using XML Features in InDesign".

This workshop provided attendees with a working knowledge of the XML features in In-Design and how these features can benefit their document management. A demonstration of InDesign‘s basic XML features was followed by information on: how to get around limitations of the features; XML rules in the InDesign scripting and how to manipulate them to generate any layout automatically; how to tie these features into an XML publishing workflow with InDesign as the target output; and references to useful links and publications so attendees can benefit from these efficiencies firsthand.

Internationalizing your content: Authoring with Localization in Mind

Lisa Pietrangeli, Language Intelligence's Director of Language Services, gave two presentations. The first, titled "Internationalizing your content: Authoring with Localization in Mind", was presented on Wednesday, November 4th.

Localization is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language and culture. Internationalization, then, is the process of planning, designing and implementing a culturally and technically neutral product, which can easily be localized. Internationalization helps decrease translation cost and speeds up time-to-market by addressing crucial technical, aesthetic, cultural, and linguistic issues at project start-up. In this presentation, Lisa explained how writing with localization in mind saves time and money while improving overall quality.

When Products Talk: A Translation/Localization Case Study

Lisa's second presentation, titled "When Products Talk: A Translation/Localization Case Study", was presented on November 4th.

From 2004–2009, Language Intelligence successfully partnered with their client who was developing an innovative multi-lingual product: a home security system that speaks 31 languages and is supported by a complete documentation set in each language. By examining the challenges and successes that LI and their client faced during the three development phases of this product, our case study will provide a Lessons Learned and Best Practices discussion covering translation technology, file migration (from MS Word to Structured FrameMaker), involving project stakeholders during localization and more.

6/26/09 Language Intelligence Launches LI Online

Language Intelligence is making language learning more accessible and convenient than ever.

Language Intelligence has launched LI Online, an online learning tool that will offer clients more flexibility in their language learning.

In addition to traditional live instruction, Language Intelligence will now offer two additional language learning options: a blended program that combines the benefits of live instruction with the flexibility of online learning, and an e-coaching program in which the learner is motivated via phone and email by an instructor giving encouragement and guidance.

"By adding an online language learning tool, we are truly opening the world to our learners," says Irene White, CEO, President and founder of Language Intelligence. "They can now learn a language anywhere and any time."

Learning options which incorporate LI Online are ideal for busy professionals who understand the benefits of learning a language in a multicultural business world, but lack the time to take traditional classes. LI Online features learning tracks designed to teach business language, even focusing on specific industries and job functions.

Programs are also offered to clients who want to learn for non-business related reasons, such as preparing for an upcoming trip or refreshing their fluency in a language they have studied before.

Programs are designed specifically for the individual client to be the shortest path to fluency. All Language Intelligence programs are preceded by a consultation to discuss learning goals, interests, desired level of proficiency and individual learning style. The learning program is then personalized to meet the needs of the individual learner. Traditional packages are spread over a manageable 10-week period with the option to continue, but can be extended or shortened depending on the preferences of the client.

LI Online is AICC and SCORM compliant. It features state-of-the-art language learning technology including speech recognition software and pronunciation tools.

Language Intelligence has been providing creative and innovative language learning solutions for both corporate clients and individual learners for more than two decades. All programs—whether individual, group, or full immersion—are personalized to the client’s needs. Language Intelligence is located in Rochester, New York, but delivers language learning globally through partner schools. The full spectrum of services Language Intelligence provides includes language learning, translation and localization, interpreting services, and culture training.
